"Painting
inspires me with a continual sense of discovery, and deep fulfillment in
expressing glimpses of inner and outer forces connected. The smell
of linseed oil alone is enough to make me long for oil painting! I
love the vast array of effects which can be expressed in oil, including
variation in the translucency of the paint, its thickness, and the
feeling which comes through brush strokes."

"Wild Apple Clusters," 2005
Oil 18" x 24"
sold
|
I found these apples clustered under an old abandoned
apple tree and loved how they grouped spatially, and the horizontal
light which caught them. This painting received the "Revington
Arthur Award for Excellence in Painting" at Images, 2005, at the
Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts. |

"Near and Far Fields" 2005
Oil 17" x 40"
sold
|
This evolved from a plein air
pastel. I selected jute (rather
than canvas) as the support for its heavily textured surface.
Since the oil version had somewhat different proportions than the
original pastel, I found it necessary to adjust the composition (in
quite a long search process!). I like the end result. |

"Red Barn and Light," 2005
Oil 26" x 42"
sold
|
This oil painting developed from an on-site
pastel sketch of a barn just
outside State College, inspired by the golden late afternoon light
streaking across and around the solid old barn. This special light
just seemed to illuminate the barn and the land together, and it felt
very special to be there. |

"Summer Morning Farm Lane" 2002
Oil 16" x 20"
sold
|
On an early August morning, I painted the shadowed lane
and hazy distance near where I grew up in Chester Springs, Pennsylvania.
I like the recession and sense of summer atmosphere. |

"Cherry Trees- Winter," 2003
18" X 14"
sold
|
This is a spot that always seems to catch my attention
in all seasons. This is the first in a series reflecting seasonal
changes. |

"Winter Light Velkoff's Field," 2001 12" X
16"
sold
|
On a morning after heavy snowfall, I was amazed to
see a warm-brown sky over a near-by farm field.
|
"Water Lily Poem," 2001
14" X 11"
sold
|
I like the simplicity of this painting which arose
from admiring a spring-fed pond in central Pennsylvania. It seems
to balance a pleasing patterning of lilies on the surface with
suggestion of the water depth penetrating.
|

"Marengo Road Farm," 2000
9" X 12"
|
I like the bold strokes laying the snow heavily on
the ground, and the house in its surroundings.
|
"Tributary," 2000
8" X 10"
|
This is an evoked image. I was painting shapes
on the canvas without any particular subject in mind, when a stream-form
gradually emerged. I love fly-fishing and stream-wandering, so I
suppose many streams lurk in the recesses of my being.
